Zipline Secures $1.5 Billion, Reaches $21.5 Billion Valuation Amid Walmart Expansion

Zipline, the California-based autonomous drone delivery and logistics startup, has announced a substantial $1.5 billion financing round, which places its post-money valuation at $21.5 billion. This significant capital raise coincides with a major expansion of its strategic partnership with Walmart, underscoring a deepening commitment from the retail giant to drone-powered last-mile delivery. The dual developments highlight a critical moment for Zipline as it moves to scale its U.S. operations.

The funding round, which totals $1.5 billion, was led by Paradigm, WCM Investment Management, and Layer Global. Additional participation came from a diverse syndicate of investors including Valor Equity Partners, Fidelity Management & Research Company, Uber, Tiger Global, J.P. Morgan, ARK Invest, and Salesforce Ventures. This broad investor base reflects a strong market belief in Zipline's operational model and its potential to capture a significant share of the evolving logistics landscape.

The expanded agreement with Walmart marks a substantial increase in Zipline's operational footprint. The new multi-year deal plans for the establishment of 300 drone delivery sites across the United States, a significant leap from the 21 active sites currently shared between the two companies. This expansion suggests Walmart's strategic bet on drone delivery as a viable and scalable component of its future supply chain, moving beyond pilot programs to a more integrated network.

Founded in 2014, Zipline initially gained traction in Africa, where its drones delivered medical supplies like blood in Rwanda, Ghana, and Nigeria. The company commenced its U.S. operations in 2020, serving Novant Health in North Carolina, and secured its initial deal with Walmart in 2021. A pivotal moment for its U.S. expansion was the acquisition of its Part 135 air carrier certification from the Federal Aviation Administration in 2022, enabling long-range commercial drone deliveries.

The newly secured funds are designated to bolster Zipline's U.S. manufacturing capabilities and expand its workforce. This investment aims to support the build-out of a nationwide drone delivery network, leveraging its Platform 2 drones for home deliveries (carrying up to eight pounds within a 10-mile radius) and its larger Platform 1 drones for long-range enterprise, business, and government deliveries, capable of 120-mile round trips.

Zipline reported a notable increase in its share of delivery revenue, growing from 10.8% to 34.9% between March and October of the current year. This metric, disclosed by the company, provides a glimpse into its operational scaling and market penetration. The latest capital infusion is expected to further accelerate this growth, positioning Zipline to capitalize on the increasing demand for autonomous last-mile logistics solutions in the U.S. and globally.
